Wingspan c. 20mmThe first British record of this species was in Scotland in 1965. Since then it has become established in a number of localities of Scotland and northern England.
It frequents coniferous woodland where the larva feeds on a number of conifers, including Norway spruce (Picea abies), loosely spinning together several needles.
Adults fly from August and overwinter, appearing again in the spring. They have noticeable raised blackish scale tufts on the forewing, and if viewed closely, it can be seen that the costa has long, cilia-like scales.
