Wingspan c. 12mm.This species resembles Ancylis mitterbacheriana but has a more rounded reddish patch at the wing base, and is generally slightly smaller.
It is widely distributed in the southern half of England, though not especially common, and occurs in smaller numbers further north and in Ireland.
In September and October, the larva spins together leaves of buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) or alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus), feeding within and then overwintering.
The adult moths fly from May to July, often during the afternoon.
