Wingspan c. 14mm.A relatively local species, occurring sporadically throughout England, this moth flies during June and July in a single generation.
The larva feeds on poplar (Populus), initially grazing the underside of a leaf, from within a silken tube which becomes covered with frass.
The larva then overwinters, and in spring feeds internally on leaf buds. The presence of a larva can be established by a frass-covered silken tube protruding from the entrance hole to the bud.
