2053 Speckled Footman Coscinia cribraria

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Wingspan 30-35 mm.

A rare and local species, confined to the heathland areas of southern Dorset. Occasional migrants of the continental subspecies arenaria also turn up in southern England.

The amount of speckling on the forewing varies between individuals, and the moths are on the wing in July and August.

The larvae feed on a number of herbaceous plants.
