Wingspan 44-54 mm.Formerly resident in a number of southern and eastern counties, this species has reduced in range, and now occurs in only a few southern counties of England and south Wales.
An inhabitant of marshy places, fens, and river banks, the adults fly at night in July and August.
The larvae feed on hemp-agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum).
