Wingspan 14-19 mm.This species has a predominantly eastern and central distribution in Britain, occurring in south and south-east England, sporadically in central England, and in the very south-east of Scotland.
There are two generations, with adults at large in May and again in August. The moths fly in afternoon sunshine and also after dark.
The favoured habitat is moorland and heathland. The foodplant is sheeps' sorrel (Rumex acetosella) and the larva feeds in a silken gallery at the base of the plant.
