Wingspan 12-16 mm.A reasonably variable species, typically well-marked, but with some specimens duller and more obscure.
Heaths and moors are its preferred habitat, this common species has a distribution throughout much of the British Isles.
The moths fly from April to June in the north, but are usually bivoltine in the south, with adults at large in April and May, then again in late June and July.
The larvae feed on a range of moorland plants including bog myrtle (Myrica gale), heather (Calluna), as well as various trees.
