Wingspan c. 21mm.A scarce and local species found in suitable areas from southern England northwards to the Midlands and South Wales. The nominate subspecies does not occur in Britain, being replaced by ssp. subcognata (formerly known as neophanes).
The larva feeds on the fungus Daldinia vernicosa which grows on burnt gorse and dead birch.
The adult moths fly in June and July.
