Small Tabby Aglossa caprealis - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Small Tabby Aglossa caprealis

(Hübner, [1809])

Wingspan c. 25mm.

Rather less common nowadays than previously, this species is still occasionally to be found in some parts of England where hay barns are still used.

The adults fly in July and August, and are most often encountered resting on the walls inside barns and similar buildings.

The larvae feed in a silken tube or gallery amongst hay or wheat stacks, feeding on associated vegetable matter. They overwinter in this state, sometimes for two winters before pupating.
