Cochylidia heydeniana

(Herrich-Schäffer, 1851)

Wingspan c. 10mm.

A fairly local species in Britain, distributed mainly in the southern half of England, inhabiting dry pastures, wasteland and sand dunes.

The adults are superficially similar to Cochylidia implicitana but can be slightly smaller, and have more barring in the cilia, with less of a pinkish suffusion than fresh examples of that species.

The larvae feed on blue fleabane (Erigeron acer) and Canadian fleabane (Conyza canadensis), feeding either on the seeds, or in the shoots.

The two generations of moths fly in April and May and again in July.
