Barred Straw Gandaritis pyraliata

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 28-33 mm.

This moth is easily identified due to its unique resting posture with the forewings held extended and completely covering the hindwings.

It is distributed over much of mainland Britain, but scarcer in the north of Scotland, and occurs in grassy downland and similar habitats.

The larvae feed on various bedstraws (Galium spp.).
