Great Oak Beauty Hypomecis roboraria
([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Wingspan 40-50 mm.
A large but cryptically-coloured moth, which inhabits oak woodland, mainly in the south of England and Wales, but ranging northwards locally to the Midlands.
It flies in June and July, and comes to light.
The caterpillar, which bears an amazing resemblance to a twig when at rest, feeds on oak (Quercus), and overwinters.
