Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing Noctua fimbriata

(Schreber, 1759)

Wingspan 45-55 mm.

Showing marked sexual dimorphism, the males of this moth are generally shades of darker brown, the females orangey-buff.

It occurs in any suitable habitat, but seems to prefer woodland, throughout most of Britain, though it is less common in Scotland.

The adults fly in one generation from July to September, and the larvae live on a range of shrubs and plants.
