Northern Winter Moth Operophtera fagata

(Scharfenberg, 1805)

Wingspan 32-40 mm. (male)

Rather similar to the Winter Moth (O. brumata), but generally larger and paler.

The females have only vestigial wings. Less common and widely distributed than brumata, this moth flies from October to December, and not through the entire winter like that species.

The larvae feed on a number of trees, including apple (Malus) and birch (Betula).
