Powdered Quaker Orthosia gracilis
([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Wingspan 35-40 mm.
A quite variable species in coloration, occurring widely in England, Wales and Ireland, less so in Scotland.
The more widely varying individuals are usually those feeding on bog myrtle (Myrica gale) in Scotland and some southern parts of its range. Elsewhere, the larvae often feed on sallows (Salix spp.), and tend to be paler and less variable.
Flying in April and May, the adults will come to light, and also visit various flowers, including sallow blossom.
