Red Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe spadicearia - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Red Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe spadicearia

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 24-27 mm.

Found fairly commonly throughout most of Britain, this species has two generations in the south; May to June and again in July and August. In more northern parts, there is only one brood, in June and July.

It is rather similar to the Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet, and some specimens are very difficult to tell apart.

The larvae feed on low-growing plants such as knotgrass (Polygonum) and bedstraw (Galium).
