Xystophora pulveratella

(Herrich-Schäffer, 1854)

Wingspan c. 11mm.

A local species, found only in certain areas of the Scottish Highlands, although it previously had been noted from north-east and south-west England, where there have not been any recent records.

The adult moths are relatively nondescript with brown forewings tinged buffish towards the apex, and buff head and labial palps. They fly in May and June.

The larvae feed on bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus spp., or bitter-vetch (Lathyrus linifolius), among spun leaves, during August and September.
