Wingspan 18-24 mm.

Distributed widely throughout much of Britain except the far north, preferring areas of old uncut hawthorn hedge, this species is reasonably common.

It has one brood, which flies in July and August, when it often is a visitor to the light-trap.

The larvae feed mainly on hawthorn (Crataegus), but also sometimes on rowan (Sorbus aucuparia).
