Like other Amphipoea species, the only sure way to determine this species is by genitalia dissection; the male structure being quite distinctive.
It occurs widely in Ireland, much of Scotland and parts of northern England and Wales, and occupies moorland and marshy areas.
Flying in August and September, it is attracted to light.
The larvae are believed to feed inside the stems of yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus).
