Rustic Shoulder-knot Apamea sordens

(Hufnagel, 1766)


Wingspan 34-42 mm.

A relatively dull brownish-grey moth, usually it can be recognised by the black 'shoulder-knot', a streak at the base of the forewing.

Common throughout most of Britain, it flies in May and June, frequenting meadows, fields and other grassy places.

The caterpillars feed through the winter on various grasses such as cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata)
