Lesser-spotted Pinion Cosmia affinis

73.215 BF2316

(Linnaeus, 1767)

Wingspan 28-35 mm.

One of three rather similar British species, this moth occurs locally in the southern half of England and Wales, with scattered occurrences further north.

The adults fly in July and August, and frequent woodland, gardens and hedgerows.

The larval foodplants are English elm (Ulmus procera) and wych elm (U. glabra), and the species has declined as a result of Dutch elm disease.
