Autumnal Moth Epirrita autumnata

(Borkhausen, 1794)

Wingspan c.42 mm.

Another of the difficult to separate Epirrita species, the poorly-marked specimens of which are best identified by reference to the genitalia.

It is widely distributed over most of the British Isles, but its exact distribution details are clouded by confusion with the other Epirrita species.

Flying from September to October, it inhabits heaths and woods. The larvae feed on birch (Betula) and alder (Alnus).
