Gypsonoma sociana

(Haworth, 1811)

Wingspan 12-15 mm.

Locally fairly common over much of Britain, this species has a distinctive blackish triangle on the lower edge of each forewing, which join together to form a diamond shape when the moth is at rest.

The larva burrows into a twig of poplar (Populus or sallow (Salix), and later occupies a leaf bud. The moth flies from late evening during July and August.
