The Conformist Lithophane furcifera - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

The Conformist Lithophane furcifera

(Hufnagel, 1766)

Wingspan c. 40-50mm.

A former resident in small numbers, the dark subspecies suffusa occurred in Glamorgan in the late 19th century, but is now considered extinct, the last recorded instance being in 1959.

The paler, continental nominate subspecies furcifera has been recorded as a migrant on a number of occasions, but not recently, until one in Northumberland in spring 2007.

The larvae feed generally on alder (Alnus), but also on birch (Betula), sallow (Salix) and poplar (Populus).
