Bedrule Brocade Mniotype solieri

73.239 BF2250a

(Boisduval, 1840)

Wingspan 35-40 mm.

A moth of southern Europe, distributed around the Mediterranean from Greece westwards to France, and in recent years pushing steadily northwards: it has been established around Paris since 2019 and was found in Belgium in 2021.

The only British example was attracted to light at Bedrule, Roxburghshire, on 29 August 1976, the locality giving rise to the English name. It is regarded as a vagrant and there have been no subsequent records.

On the continent there is a single generation, the adults flying in the autumn from late August into October, with the winter passed as a larva.

The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on a variety of low-growing plants including valerians (Valeriana, Centranthus), and also on shrubs such as box (Buxus sempervirens).
