Maple Prominent Ptilodon cucullina

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 35-40 mm.

Although similar in shape to the Coxcomb Prominent (P. capucina), this species has a more variegated appearance.

Its distribution covers the south and south-east of England, but is not especially common.

Its habitat requirements are woodland and chalk downland, and it flies from May to July.

The larvae live on field maple (Acer campestris) and sometimes sycamore (A. pseudoplatanus).
