Early Moth Theria primaria

(Haworth, 1809)

Wingspan 32-37 mm.

This aptly-named species is to be found on the wing in January and February, though like many other winter species, the females are almost wingless.

It is quite common in England, Wales, Ireland and the south of Scotland, occupying woodland margins and hedgerows.

It feeds on hawthorn (Crataegus) and blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) in the larval stage.
